The 2018 Ford Explorer is offered in five trim levels, the Explorer, XLT, Limited, Sport, and Platinum.  Under the hood of the Explorer and XLT trim levels there is a standard 3.5L V6 engine that produces 290 horsepower and 255 lb-ft of torque.  When the 3.5L V6 works with standard Front-Wheel Drive (FWD) it can tow a maximum of 5,000 pounds when equipped with the Class III Trailer Towing Package and a 3.39 axle ratio.  With All-Wheel Drive (AWD), the Class III Trailer Towing Package and a 3.65 axle ratio the 3.5L V6 can also tow up to 5,000 pounds.  Without being equipped with the Class III Towing Package the 3.5L V6 engine can tow only 2,000 pounds in both AWD and FWD.

The Limited trim level of the 2018 Explorer gets equipped with a 2.3L EcoBoost® Inline 4-Cylinder engine that supplies the 2018 Explorer with 280 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque.  In FWD or AWD and when loaded with the Class II Trailer Towing Package the 2.3L EcoBoost® engine can tow a maximum of 3,000 pounds.  Without the Class II Towing Package the 2.3L EcoBoost® engine can handle towing up to 2,000 pounds.  Finally, the Limited and Platinum trim levels receive a 3.5L EcoBoost® engine under the hood that cranks out 365 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque.  The 3.5L EcoBoost engine only works with AWD and doesn’t require the Trailer Towing Package to have the ability to tow a maximum of 5,000 pounds.  Now that you know the engine specs and towing capacities for the 2018 Ford Explorer you can take it for a test drive at EVS Auto in Milwaukee, WI to feel its powerful engines for yourself first-hand.
