How Ford Uses Math for Self-Driving Cars

Earlier this month was Pi Day, specifically on March 14. If you don’t know what that is, pi is the mathematical constant that is defined as the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. Pi is an infinite number, but is usually shortened to 3.14 to make things simple. That is why March 14 (3-14) is known as Pi Day.

So, what does this have to do with Ford? Well, on Pi Day, Ford released a video sharing how much mathematics plays a role in their development of self-driving cars.

When you think about it, this makes sense. Math may be used in the development of normal vehicles, but in self-driving cars, calculations likely have to be made all the time. For example, the vehicle has to take into consideration its own speed while also considering the speed of vehicles around it, doing immediate calculations to determine the risk of collisions and when to apply the brakes. Math allows Ford to achieve the sort of precision necessary to create safe autonomous vehicles.
