5 Steps to Check Your Car’s Oil

  1. Park your car on level ground and allow it to cool. Since oil is liquid, parking on uneven ground will lead to an inaccurate reading. Letting the engine cool will keep you from burning yourself.
  2. Open the hood and locate your dipstick. The dipstick handle is often orange or yellow in color.
  3. Pull out the dipstick and clean the oil off the end with a paper towel. This is to ensure an accurate reading.
  4. Reinsert the dipstick fully like you found it, then remove again. Before wiping, take a look at its color and level. Dark oil means you will need an oil change while amber-colored oil means it is still fresh. Your oil level should be above the lowest dot and below the highest dot.
  5. Wipe the dipstick again then reinsert it. Close the hood when you are done.
