Falling into this final category is the widespread use of the the word \u201cbubbler,\u201d in reference to the individual drinking fountains that most of the rest of the English-speaking world refers to as, well, drinking fountains.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s nothing new to point out that Wisconsinites use the word \u201cbubbler;\u201d the word was referenced as a \u201cYou Know You\u2019re From Milwaukee When\u2026\u201d giveaway in newspapers as far back as the 1960s. But why, exactly, is this term so firmly seared onto Wisconsin tongues?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Looking for a new ride? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buyevscars.com\/new-cars-milwaukee-wi\">Check out our inventory!<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dealerfireblog.com\/buyevscars\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/582\/2020\/09\/bubbler-man_df.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4100\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not known for certain why Wisconsinites use the word \u201cbubbler\u201d to refer to drinking fountains. <strong>The most common theory is that the use of the phrase is the fault of Kohler, a manufacturing company based in Wisconsin.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kohler materials from 1914 refer to their drinking fountain product using the adjective \u201cbubbling\u201d and \u201cbubbler.\u201d According to Joan Houston Hall, the former chief editor of \u201cThe Dictionary of American Regional English,\u201d use of term, \u201cmirrors the marketing area of the Kohler Company of 1918 or so.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that drinking fountains first began appearing in Milwaukee in the late 1880s. They use of the term bubbler first appears in Milwaukee newspapers in 1910, where the fountains are described as \u201csanitary bubblers,\u201d \u201cfountain bubblers\u201d and \u201cwater bubblers.\u201d By the early 1920s, the prefixes were dropped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hydrate your body with a bubbler. Hydrate your vehicle <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buyevscars.com\/car-service-milwaukee-wi\">with an oil change. <\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Is the word \u201cbubbler\u201d used outside of Wisconsin?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In what may be a shocking twist, however, Wisconsin isn\u2019t the only place that uses the term \u201cbubbler.\u201d Rhode Island says it too. And so does much of Australia: most of the eastern half of the continent, including Queensland, New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory, along with cities such as Sydney and Canberra also say bubbler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the United States, however, the phrase remains most closely associated with Wisconsin.
