Why does it seem on the days that we are already running late, everyone on the highway is driving like they are in a parade?  The most frustrating part of our day is when we encounter three vehicles driving the same speed across all three lanes of traffic, essentially rendering the entire concept of a multi-lane highway obsolete.  You don’t need to be an aggressive speed demon on the highway to facilitate proper traffic flow, all you need to do is be attentive and conscientious of other drivers on the highway.  Avoid causing and getting caught in congestion on the highway by following these simple rules and tips.

The open road and monotony of extended highway drives can result in a loss of focus, but inattentive driving at highway speed can cause drastic consequences. Be aware of the vehicles around you and allow for other drivers to merge and exit the highway without your vehicle being an added obstacle.

Follow the Flow of Traffic
No matter what the posted speed limit is there are drivers who will exceed it and those who will drive cautiously below it, and both examples are equally dangerous to other drivers. Excessive speed creates fear in other drivers as the speeder whizzes by and slow moving drivers create traffic pile ups behind them. If you want to drive fast, do so at a reasonable rate to traffic around you and if you are the extra cautious driver you still need to keep pace with other drivers for safety.

It’s the Passing Lane Not the “Fast” Lane
“Fast” is a relative term and means something different to everybody, to the cautious driver 60 MPH is fast while to the driver running 15 minutes late for work 110 MPH doesn’t seem fast enough. No matter how many lanes the highway you are driving on has, the far-left lane (non HOV lane) is intended for passing purposes only. It doesn’t matter how fast you are going, if you are not passing another vehicle you should not be in the left lane, period. Once you have passed slower moving traffic return the right lane to keep the left lane open and traffic moving properly.
