The 2019 NFL Draft has come and gone, and all 32 teams are happy with who they got. Every General Manager will tell you that they love their picks and their team is improved. The Green Bay Packers entered day one of the draft with two first round picks thanks to a trade with the New Orleans Saints during last year’s draft. Would they trade up? Trade down? Surprise everyone? Keep reading to learn about the 2019 Packers draft class.

Round 1
The Packers drew attention for taking Michigan edge rusher Rashan Gary with the 12th overall pick. Gary’s athleticism is unmatched, but there have been concerns about his work ethic and health, though those criticisms are somewhat unfounded. Nonetheless, General Manager Brian Gutekunst expressed his confidence in Gary and fans should be excited about adding another versatile, athletic player to the front seven. The Packers held the 30th pick but traded it along with a pair of fourth-round selections to move up to the 21st spot in the first round. That pick was used on Maryland safety Darnell Savage, who is considered by some to be the best safety in the draft. Savage will undoubtedly have a golden opportunity to start week one alongside another new Packer, Adrian Amos.

Rounds 2 & 3
Day two of the draft came with some uncertainty for Green Bay. After going with two defensive players on the first day, would they try to get another weapon for quarterback Aaron Rodgers? Would they continue to build the defense? Well, with the 44th pick, they selected Mississippi State center/guard Elgton Jenkins. Jenkins can play anywhere on the offensive line, which was key to the team picking him. Jace Sternberger, a tight end out of Texas A&M, was chosen in the third round and will likely be a key part of the offense moving forward.
Rounds 4-7
The Packers traded away both of their fourth-round picks, so they did not have another selection until midway through the fifth round. That was used on another Texas A&M player, defensive lineman Kingsley Keke. Round six brought in two more skill position players, Toldeo cornerback Ka’Dar Hollman and Notre Dame halfback Dexter Williams. The team’s final draft selection was Ty Summers, an inside linebacker from Texas Christian University.
2019 Packers offseason outlook
The team went defense-heavy in the draft (again), in hopes of building a squad that will be good enough to compete for a Super Bowl title. The first wave of free agency also centered around the defense, as the Packers signed Amos, Za’Darius Smith, and Preston Smith. Fans should expect the rest of the offseason to be pretty tame. Gutekunst is probably done with big signings, but the preseason will inevitably come with surprise cuts, and the Packers could always swoop in and grab another veteran. The team has certainly improved, so we will have to wait and see if they can become a contender once again, and if Rodgers can reclaim his title as the King in the North.
