Preparing a Winter Safety Kit

Winter in Wisconsin can be very intense. One day the weather will be clear, the next day it rains, the following it snows and suddenly, safe driving conditions deteriorate. You never know what can happen while you’re traveling through winter conditions. This is why it is important to stay prepared and know what to carry in your car this winter. Also, you should know how to get your vehicle ready for cold weather and snow.

Your car might lose control and end up in a ditch and leave you stranded for a few hours. You might also get stuck in deep snow and be unable to move your car. That’s why every driver should have a winter safety kit in their car, loaded with everything they need to stay warm, hydrated and safe.

Winter Jacket, Boots, Hats and Gloves

Always carry warm winter clothes and gear just in case you get stuck in the cold without your vehicle’s heater. Make sure you also pack a couple of blankets to help you and your passengers stay cozy until help arrives.

It’s a good practice to keep a cellphone charger and battery pack in your vehicle in case your car dies and you need to call for assistance. Keep the battery pack charged and ready in case of an emergency. Also, keep a flashlight in your vehicle in case you need to exit the car at night.

There are a few things you should keep in your car all winter long, which include an ice scraper and snow brush, jumper cables, a first aid kit, flares and tire chains. Items like jumper cables and a first aid kit should remain in your vehicle year-round, just in case of emergency.
