Wisconsin obviously has a terrific and vibrant German population, as evidenced by its beer-and-brat national identity. This is never more on display than during the fall, when Oktoberfest celebrations can be found across the state. But which are the best to be found near Milwaukee and Fond du Lac? Let’s look at some of Wisconsin’s best Oktoberfest celebrations, shall we?
Best Oktoberfest Celebrations in Wisconsin 2016
Milwaukee Oktoberfest — Glendale, WI — Every weekend from Sept. 9th to October 1st
Let’s start with the biggest and baddest of them all. Taking place just north of the Bayshore Town Center in Glendale, this celebration might be the most authentic Oktoberfest celebration in the whole state. The venues are set up to mimic those found in Munich, with large beer and concert halls allowing for scores of visitors. For all of the German music, food and beverages you can handle, start here.
Appleton Octoberfest — Appleton, WI — Sept. 23rd and 24th
What the Milwaukee fest offers in authenticity, the Appeton event matches in sheer bravado. For 35 years now, the Milwaukee Oktoberfest has offered over a mile of food vendors, arts and crafts, and live music to the 100,000+ attendees. It also kicks off with the Friday night “License to Cruise” classic car show, which certainly informs what we love about it so much.
New Glarus Oktoberfest — New Glarus, WI — Sept. 23rd through 25th
Much like Switzerland is Germany’s neighbor to the south, so too is New Glarus something of smaller sibling to Milwaukee. Located south of Madison and sponsored by the famed New Glarus brewery, this celebration kicks off with the tapping of a wooden keg on Friday night, and is then followed by two full days of food, music and revelry. We personally recommend checking out Boogie & the YoYoz on Saturday night, as well as The Jimmy’s on Sunday afternoon.
Cedarburg Oktoberfest — Cedarburg, WI — October 9th and 10th
Cedarburg has one of the most renowned German communities in our area, so it’s little surprise that it also has one of the better Oktoberfest celebrations as well. In its ninth year, this event features oompah music from authentic german bands, all of the wiener schnitzel and currywurst you can handle, and contests and games for visitors of all ages. Admission and parking are free for this event.
